Hello everyone! My name is James, but some friends call me Jim (and even Jimmy!). I am from a town in the middle of England called Belper. A lot of my family are from the city of Nottingham though – maybe you know Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest?! Near Belper is a large natural area called the ‘Peak District’, and a little further away is the ‘Lake District’. As you can guess, the first is famous for mountain peaks, and the second for lakes! I really enjoy spending time in nature. One of the many reasons I came to Japan is for the landscape.
I did my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Philosophy. After that, I did a Masters in ‘Continental Philosophy’, which has a big focus on life and art. One of my favourite philosophers, Martin Heidegger, had conversations with some Japanese philosophers from Kyoto.
As well as philosophy, a passion of mine is literature, especially poetry. I also care about health, and want to get much fitter during my time in Japan! (But I also want to eat lots of delicious food…)
In the future I will do a PhD in philosophy. I would like to work on the connections between Eastern and Western philosophy. They have a lot of differences. In some places there can be a bridge. But in some places they even intersect!
So far I have only visited Tokyo and Kyoto. I love Tokyo for the amount of things to do there. I love Kyoto for its history and beautiful shrines, gardens, and streets. I want to see much more of Japan, so please tell me your recommendations!
