昔、中学生や高校生の卒業の打ち上げパーティの
定番はピザと百人一首大会でした。
「英語の塾なのになんで百人一首なんですか？」
と生徒が言っても、
「だって、好きなんだもん！」と強引にやってました。
そんなことを言ってた生徒たちも、結構盛り上がりました。
先日、日経新聞でこの百人一首の英訳を完成した人の話が
出ていました。
面白そうなので買ってみました。
アイルランド出身の翻訳家、ピーター・マクミラン
さんが１０年がかりで完成させたものです。
素晴らしい翻訳でした。彼はこの翻訳で賞をとり、当時のケネディ大使に
招待されました。
一つ、私の好きな歌をあげてみます。

さて先日、この本をジェームズ先生に読ませてあげました。
彼は、イギリスで、道元禅師の「正法眼蔵」を読んで憧れて
日本に来ようと思ったくらい、日本の哲学や文学が大好きです。
いつか「英語百人一首大会」をペックでもやりたいですね。

I used to have graduation parties for my students at the end of the year.
These parties featured two things: pizza and Hyakunin-ishu.
Hyakuin-ishu is a card game using 100 waka poems created 1000 – 2000 years ago.
It is a treasure box of beautiful Japanese language.
My students always asked me, ” Why do we have to do old Japanese card games?
This is the graduation party of English school.”
I answered, ” Because I love that!”
They complained, but once we started, they were really excited.
Some days ago a Japanese newspaper introduced a translator
who completed the English Hyakuni-Issu with the title “One Hundred
Poets, One poem Each”.
His name is Peter Macmillan, Irish scholar majoring in old Japanese
literature. He got a prize by this work and was invited to the US embassy
by Ambassador Katherine Kennedy.
Soon after seeing that article, I ordered this book from Amazon.
The book got to me some days later, and I found it is great.
Our teacher, James-sensei is an old Japanese lover. He made a decision to
come to Japan mainly because he was impressed by “Shoho-genzo” by
Dogen, a zen buddhist about ８00 years ago.
He sometimes shows his notebook to me and asks the meanings and pronunciations
of old Japanese which he feels have beautiful sounds.
So I decided to introduce this book to him. I am very interested in his reaction.
