I usually take ‘Geza’ stances when I face my students.
Geza is a training method of the Shingon School of Buddhism, in
which a monk is required to put himself below any creature around him.
When I teach somebody, I try to respect him or her and put myself below.
I try to speak as politely as possible. (Sorry! Sometimes I am not mature enough
to follow this rule, because I am a human being.)
One of the benefits I can get by doing this ‘Geza’ method is that I can avoid
being trapped in the teacher-student mindset. Once I am in this mindset, I can’t
say stupid jokes or make mistakes. In other words, I can’t be free.
Just recently, a 5-year-old boy explained how to catch ‘Dango-mushi'(pillbugs) to me.
He talked like an authority about this field.
While hearing that, I kept saying ,”Really?” or “Wow!”. And at the same moment,
I was feeling free in mind.
