自然体験
今年も冒険学校が無事終わりました。事故やケガ病気などもなく、
みなさん元気いっぱいに活動を楽しんでくれて、感謝です。
いつものことですが、たった数日の海での生活が子供達の表情を
ガラリと変えることに驚きを感じます。スタッフのみなさん
ご苦労様でした。
自然の中に体をおき、心を開くことには深い意味があります。
昔やってた、ある自然体験イベントでのお話です。
過酷な受験勉強を勝ち抜いて早稲田大学に合格した
生徒をスタッフとして山に連れて行ったことがあります。
彼はテニスとピアノが得意ですが、海や山での経験は
ほとんどありませんでした。
午前中は普通に隠れ家作りとかを手伝って
くれていたのですが、午後、急に姿を消しました。
ふと気づいて「おーい。 ーくん」と声をかけたら、
遠く方から声が戻ってきて、山の奥から
もぞもぞと出てきました。
「どうしたん」と聞くと、
「すみません。何かわからないけど山の中に入っていくと気持ちよくて、
しゃがんでました。すると、なんか不思議な気分になって、じっとしてたら
そのまま２時間すぎてました。こんなの初めてです」
おそらく、彼の中で何かのリミッターが外れたのだと思います。
それを機会に彼は突然アクティブになって、東南アジアを自転車で
旅したりするようになりました。そして、今は商社マンになって
アメリカで何百億というビジネスを仕切ってます。
自然は限りなく奥深く、そこでの体験は時に人生を変えます。

I am really happy PEC Adventure School in Umashima Island has worked well
and kids who joined had a great time.
Every time I compare their faces after the event with those before, I am
amazed how active their expressions have turned. I really want to show my
deep gratitude to our staff members who took care of students.
PEC has been doing this kind of nature activities for more than two decades
because we believe being in and attuned to nature has a significant meaning
to children.
Thinking about that, I remember a high school student who joined in our event
some years ago.
He had just gone through a tough study period for the entrance exam successfully,
and decided to enter Waseda University in Tokyo. I introduced him to our nature
activity in the mountain for change. He was a good pianist and tennis player,
but he had had almost no experience in nature.
In the morning, he helped us take care of small kids, but after lunch, he suddenly
disappeared. I didn’t notice he had gone because I was busy doing other things.
When we were preparing to leave, someone said he was not with us. I felt a
little worried and went back into the mountain to look for him. After calling his name
for some time, I heard his voice from the deep bush.
When he came out, I said “What happened? We are worried about you.”
He answered, ” I am sorry, but I have no idea what happened”, and then
explained what he did.
After eating lunch, he didn’t know why, but wanted to get into the deep quiet
place into the mountain,so he walked a while. Then he wanted to sit there, so he did.
He felt something inside him go out. He kept sitting silently for some time and
he heard my voice calling his name. Looking at the watch, he noticed two hours had passed.
I believe a barrrier in his mind was reset during that time and he became open to
nature.
Since then, his lifestyle has changed, and he became aggressive. During college
holidays he traveled a lot like a bicycle ride from Malaysia to Thailand. Now he
is an executive in a trade firm and working in the US.
What we experience in nature is very profound and sometimes
changeｓ our life.
